My Dog and I: Being a Concise Treatise of the Various Breeds of Dogs, Their Origin and Uses. Written Expressly for the Novice Containing a Comprehensive Mode of Treatment Both in Health and Sickness, Together with the Names of Some Prominent Breeders, by Harry Woodworth Huntington›
Like so many of the early standards, it leaves out as much as it mentions. Apparently much was taken for granted, that the reader would know without being told. For instance, no mention whatever of size or of gait. Interesting that even though this is written for the “Flat or Wavy Coated Retriever” that it calls for the coat to be as “straight as possible”.

Yes, and everything is relative. They call for a small, close ear but the illustration does not show the “potato chip” ear that some Goldens have today, small to this person i think meant not pendulum style long.
This was before the turn of the century when retrievers were moving from description to breed so I think it is interesting… In progress… still being formulated so to speak
